What is Performance Psychology?

Performance Psychology, related to Sport Psychology, uses psychological principles to facilitate, achieve, and enhance optimal human performance. While Sport Psychology focuses on athletes, Performance Psychology focuses on other professions that demand excellence in psychomotor performance in high stakes environments such as the performing arts, military, and emergency services.

Angelica Potter, MA, has been embedded in the performing arts world for most of her life. Studying, learning, and working alongside hundreds of other artists and professionals over the years while witnessing and experiencing the highs and lows that come with a life and career in this world.  In launching Artists Psych, she embarks on a new journey while continuing to serve the performing arts community. Her goal is to provide support, guidance, and knowledge to performing artists at all levels so they can perform at their best.

What is Psychological Skills Training?

Becoming a high performer or performing optimally doesn't happen overnight. Psychological Skills Training (PST) includes the learning and application of mental skills such as concentration, relaxation, self-talk, visualization, and goal setting. By incorporating PST into a performer's routine, they can learn how to manage stress and anxiety, handle pressure in a healthy way, and become more resilient to challenges that arise in their life and career.

Why is Mental Performance Training Important?

Preparing mentally for a performance or competition season is just as important as preparing physically, yet many young performers are never taught the skills that will help them perform at an optimal level. By learning and incorporating mental skills into their routines, performers can achieve peak performance and thrive on stage and off.
